Laura Brandt, Madison, WI
At 13 years old, Laura realized the biology textbooks at her local middle school did not contain information regarding evolution. She designed a curriculum, worked with a microbiologist at a local university to write a pamphlet on the evolutionary battle between fungi and bacteria, and presented her material to middle school students. Two years later, Laura began taking courses at the University of Madison-Wisconsin where she worked with college freshmen and sophomores to design and construct a prototype of an apparatus to launch a small cubical research satellite from the side of a spacecraft. Laura is the regional conference representative for the Society of Women Engineers, and she works as a tour guide for the Physics Museum at UW-Madison.
