After listening to a speech given by Danielle Cougar, a Senior Research Engineer focusing on Quantum Information Science at Lockheed Martin, Joyce was inspired to create an organization to empower girls to pursue STEM careers. With a friend, Joyce founded a Young Women in STEM Engineering Club with a mission “to boost female interest in the field of engineering by providing an atmosphere where girls feel invited and encouraged to explore engineering, without any pressure to disprove stereotypes.” Young Women in STEM received sponsorship from Lockheed Martin and has been featured on ABC News and in local newspapers. Young Women in STEM has also held workshops for elementary-aged Girl Scouts. In addition to serving as founder and president of Young Women in STEM, Joyce is also a member of the varsity swim & dive team, a researcher for the Waksman Student Scholars Program, and an intern for the National Institutes of Health.
