My name is Haoyun Deng, and I go by Wendy. I was born in Guangzhou, China, and my family immigrated to Philadelphia when I was in fourth grade. During the fall of 2021, I will be a freshman at the University of Pennsylvania majoring in biology, aspiring to become a dentist who can give back to the community that warmly welcomed and accepted me upon my arrival.
I have been interested in the natural sciences ever since I was little. In Central High School, I found that a STEM career would be more fulfilling and enjoyable for me since it aligns with my interests, particularly through classes such as AP Biology and AP Calculus BC. My summer job at a dental office was also one of the main impetus for my aspired path in dentistry. With this scholarship, I will be more able to focus on my studies toward a dental career and connect with my Asian roots; after all, I do not wish for my immigration to become the wall that separates my Chinese identity from my American self.
