  • El Paso, TX, Silva Health Magnet High School

Wesley developed what he coins as an “addiction” while interning with a research laboratory over the summer. Fixated on the pursuit of scientific advancement, he applied for the NIH grant, STEP-UP, to fund his internship. Wesley was awarded the grant and he embarked on his summer-long journey of analyzing Parkinson’s disease with a concentration on dysfunctional proteins. He learned to decipher scientific data and literature, and he eventually produced his own. Wesley is a published co-author of a research paper in the ACS Medical Chemistry Letters. He is also a national champion in the HOSA Health Care Issues Exam and a scholarship recipient. Wesley was selected for a research internship at Texas Tech Medical School for the summer of 2014. He is pursuing a career as a research scientist.
