Alayna Hoesly, University of Wisconsin-Madison
Edgar High School, Edgar, WI
Alayna’s mother shared the story of one of her patients, a terminally ill four-year-old girl who had not been expected to reach age 4. The little girl had never spent Christmas outside of a hospital, and Alayna was determined to have her experience at least one Christmas at home. Learning of the little girl’s trials in October, Alayna quickly collaborated with her FCCLA advisor and rallied up 50 club members to volunteer. A pizza restaurant donated food for volunteers. A tree farm donated a tree, and the fire department helped string Christmas lights. A radio station played Christmas music, and a news station televised the event. Although the young girl has passed away, Alayna vividly remembers her joyous smile at the sight of her very first Christmas, and this memory has inspired her to continue to try to help others. Alayna is a three-sport athlete, participating in volleyball, basketball, and track. She has served as team captain and assisted her track team in winning their 4th consecutive team state title. She is also the vice president of FCCLA, the parliamentarian of FBLA, and a hostess at Applebee’s.
